These instructions cover both the removal of the factory boot and installation of the WheelSkins leather boot.Tools and materials required: flat-blade screwdriver, razor blade knife and liquid adhesive (not Epoxy). Note: there are many adhesives available at your local home improvement warehouse, made specifically for plastics, vinyl and leather. A small tube will be less than $5.00.
REMOVAL:
1) Remove the center console bezel.
Open the console lid and lift out the box. Open the drink/cup holder. Insert the flat blade screwdriver under the console bezel and pry it up. It will POP free. You might think it's going to break the popping is normal! Just pry it up and continue down the console until it snaps free. Lift it out and you will have the shifter and its indicator plate exposed
2) Remove the shift knob
The shifter and its indicator plate are just sitting in the center console panel. In order to get them completely free for this installation, you will need to remove the knob.
A single U shaped clip in the front of the knob holds it on. The clip is well disguised, if you pull the knob all the way back in 1st gear you will be able to see a metal strip about ½" long. Simply insert the screwdriver blade under this strip and the clip will slide out. It helps to press down on the knob to release the pressure on the clip. Once the clip is out, you can pull the knob off the shaft, lift the entire assembly out of the console. Twist the base of the lamp assembly and remove the indicator lamp. Some Grand Prix models have a Performance Shift button on the shift knob. You will need to disconnect the in line connector that powers the Performance Shift button.
3) Removal of the old boot.
The factory boot is inside a two-piece clamping type assembly. There are four separate clips that hold the two pieces together. Lift up each clip and pull the tow pieces apart. The boot is hot riveted to the indicator panel. Use the razor blade to cut the old boot free and to smooth out the area.
Remove the knob from the boot by pulling it free. The knob has a small tapered rubber bell that holds the boot in place at the top.
INSTALLATION:
1) Attaching the new boot
Insert the narrow end of the up through the indicator panel. Apply your adhesive to the panel (follow the instructions from the adhesive). Then roll the bottom edge of the WheelSkins boot up over the oval rim (where you applied the adhesive) and clamp them together. NOTE: don't use too much adhesive, it can be pressed out of the desired area and into the exposed cupped area of the shift boot. After the required drying time you are ready to reinstall.
2) Replacing the Shift Knob
Tuck a small portion of the top of the shift boot (approximately ½") back inside the boot. Insert the shift knob (and Performance Shift button wire, if any). Reattach the lamp and Performance Shift button. Set the entire assembly back in to the Factory slots.
3) Replace the console bezel
Insert the console bezel back under the air conditioning control panel first, Press it down into place and snap it back up to the console box. Replace the console box, close the lid and you're done!!
